Society of Pelvic Reconstructive Surgeons
The conception of the Society of Pelvic Reconstructive Surgeons (SPRS) began in 1987 when S. Robert Kovac, MD, a vaginal surgeon from St. Louis, Missouri, started the First International Vaginal Surgery Conference to promote the science and art of vaginal surgery among practicing gynecologic surgeons. The main focus of the Conference was education and advancement of the vaginal approach for hysterectomy. For the next ten years, Dr. Kovac and his wife Patricia personally sponsored the next six International Vaginal Surgery Conferences.
The Kovacs were encouraged by many attendees of the Conferences to develop a society dedicated to the gynecologic surgeon interested in continuing education in pelvic reconstructive surgery primarily performed by the vaginal route. Thus, in 1996, after a generous educational grant provided by Dr. and Mrs. Kovac, the Society of Pelvic Reconstructive Surgeons was created. The Board of Directors consisted of Drs. Robert Porges, Thomas Julian, Robert Rogers, Sebastian Faro, and Taylor Kirby. In 1997, Drs. Carl Zimmerman, Stephen Larson, and Clifford (Bob) Wheeless were added to the Board. In view of an increasing need to impact surgical education in pelvic reconstructive surgery, the Board decided that the SPRS needed to redefine its goals and expand its membership to include all pelvic reconstructive surgeons, not just practicing gynecologic surgeons, but also urologists and colorectal surgeons.
The SPRS Board was responsible for establishing the first evidence-based guidelines to determine the appropriate route of hysterectomy (Guidelines to Determine the Route of Hysterectomy), which were adopted by the National Guideline Clearinghouse.
Members of the SPRS are required to pay annual dues and must attend one Conference every three years to maintain their membership. The annual Conference provides new information in pelvic anatomy and exposes pelvic surgeons to newer procedures based on the restoration of normal pelvic anatomy. The Board is responsible for selecting the ConferenceĆs faculty, who consists of well-recognized worldwide experts in the field of pelvic reconstructive surgery.
